Scoring & Rules

How does the app handle ties?

deckref.app calculates ties automatically according to standard NFHS scoring procedures.

The Math:

If two swimmers tie for a place (e.g., 1st place), the app adds the points for that place and the immediate next place together, divides them by the number of tied swimmers, and awards that point value to each.

Example:

In a relay where 1st place is 8 points and 2nd place is 4 points: A tie for 1st results in both teams receiving 6 points (8+4=12 / 2). The next finishing team takes 3rd place.

What happens when I mark a swimmer as “Exhibition” (Exh)?

Marking a lane as Exhibition means that swimmer's performance will be recorded, but they will receive 0 points toward the team total.

Note:

Depending on your specific league rules, exhibition swimmers typically do not “displace” scoring swimmers from the opposing team. The app calculates the score based purely on the eligible (non-exhibition) finish order.

How do Disqualifications (DQ) affect the score?

A swimmer marked as DQ receives 0 points. The app automatically “bumps up” all subsequent swimmers in the finish order to fill the gap.

Example:

If the 1st place finisher is DQ'd, the swimmer who touched 2nd is automatically awarded 1st place points.

How is Diving scored?

You can enter results for up to 6 divers per school. Since diving scoring (judging individual dives) is complex, deckref.app focuses on the result. You simply enter the final place finish or total points for the divers, and the app adds the correct NFHS event points to the team total (e.g., 6-4-3-2-1).

Using the App

I entered the wrong finish order. Can I fix it?

Yes. You can edit any event at any time.

  1. Navigate back to the specific Event/Heat
  2. Change the lane finish positions or status
  3. Tap “Apply”

Real-time Update:

The Total Meet Score will immediately recalculate based on your correction. You do not need to manually subtract points.

Can I track the 500 Freestyle laps?

Yes. The app includes a digital lap counter for distance events. This is a visual aid for the official or scorer to track the swimmer in the water.

Note:

The lap counter is separate from the scoring. You can do a quick entry for distance or use the lap counter to signify the finish order.

Does the app support 6, 8, and 10 lane pools?

Yes. When you set up a meet, you select the lane count. The app automatically adjusts the default point values for relays and individual events based on the number of scoring lanes available (as defined by NFHS guidelines for that pool size).

Can I delete a meet?

Yes. You have complete control over your data. If you created a test meet or need to remove an old one, simply go to your “My Meets” list and select delete. This action is permanent.
